Patient-Customized Partial Knee Replacements
Trust the Partial Knee Replacement Experts at Lederman Kwartowitz Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine.
The knee is a complex joint made up of three separate compartments. When wear-and-tear to the knee is confined to one or two compartments, a partial knee replacement may be option.
Dr. Lederman and Dr. Kwartowitz are leaders in partial joint replacement surgery. We were the first orthopedic surgeons in the Midwest to perform the ConforMIS iUni and iDuo patient-customized partial knee replacement implants.
Using 3D CT scan images, a patient’s own knee anatomy provides the template to create their customized knee implant. Because ConforMISiUni and iDou are customized to each patient’s own knee anatomy, no two are alike.
Benefits of a Customized Partial Knee Implant
These pioneering implants are combined with a resurfacing procedure and are much less invasive than a traditional knee replacement since more of the healthy bone and tissue is preserved. The benefits are:
- Less tissue trauma during surgery.
- Smaller incision area.
- Less pain.
- Faster recovery times.
- A more natural fit, feel and range of motion.

How to Prepare for Partial Knee Replacement Surgery
Having strong muscles in the upper and lower legs are critical to support the knee joint. We want every patient to go into knee replacement surgery with strong leg muscles, which will help in the post-surgical recovery.
We encourage all patients to participate in pre-operative leg strengthening. This can be accomplished by using an at-home muscle stimulation device and/or through preoperative physical therapy.
Recovering from Partial Knee Replacement Surgery
While every patient’s experience with knee replacement surgery is different, most can expect to bear weight and walk with an aid within a few hours of surgery. Most patients return to their normal daily activities within six weeks and more vigorous activities and sports about three months after surgery.
We will also prescribe post-surgical physical therapy and recommend MLS Laser Therapy accelerate the healing process and reduce pain and swelling. Use of MLS Laser Therapy reduces pain and swelling and accelerates post-surgical healing time.
